Teaching

I really enjoyed the philosophy session. I thought the discussion was very interesting and it made me think about how one thing can be seen in different ways by different people. The discussion made me think deeper about a question that I would not normally think about. My favourite idea was that if the hole in the Polo mint was nothing, and nothing meant ‘not anything’, then it wouldn’t be there at all, but it is, so nothing must be something. (Sophie)

‘I enjoyed the opportunity to express our own opinions and to disagree with others about different situations. What was also interesting was how you could give one opinion and explain it, then be given a different situation by Mr Campbell-Harris and have your opinion changed.’ (Shania)

‘This has been the single best thing she has done in lockdown. It has prompted her to think and engage. It is lovely hearing some of the things she talks about. Her general knowledge and critical thinking have grown as a result of the course. Sometimes her arguments are a little wacky, but broader points are carrying through – today I heard about the ant and the cricket at lunch time and we discussed the importance of “be kind”. (Iris)

‘I just wanted to feed back to you how much Hope enjoyed the session last Thursday. She can be quite anxious contributing in front of strangers, and it takes her a while to warm up, but the host was very good at encouraging her, and once the session finished she was buzzing with excitement.’ (Jo)

‘My son has found your sessions thought provoking in ways he has not experienced before and as such has been awaiting each session with some enthusiasm. Thank you so much for your encouragement throughout Steve, and particularly for providing this escape from lockdown mundanity for so many weeks. Really worthwhile work that I am certain has been valued by many others too.’ (Shaun)

‘This is an amazing introductory course to philosophy (although if you had some experience in philosophy already it’s still engaging and thought-provoking too)! You cover a range of interesting topics from political philosophy to epistemology to logic so there really is something for everyone. The instructors are very helpful and always willing to offer additional support where they can. It was also lovely to meet a fantastic group of other passionate philosophers :)’ (Laura)

‘I have never studied philosophy in school and so was unsure of what university level philosophy would be like, and I feel like this was the perfect introduction! I was able to talk to people with sometimes completely different philosophical views to mine and the ability to debate and either grow more confident in your own opinion or potentially change your stance is so helpful. The small group size means you’re always able to let your voice be heard, and though I was originally nervous about speaking up, the warmth I felt from both the teacher and the other students immediately allowed me to overcome those nerves.’ (Eva)

Teacher Training

‘Thank you again for your amazing supervising and support: having this kind of feedback is very precious, and I don’t mean all the good things you reported- which are pleasant to read of course, rather the thorough details, reflections and suggestions’ (Daniela)

‘Thank you Steven for all your assistance and feedback in handling the training sessions during the last five weeks. I’m grateful for the mentoring meetings you have scheduled with me during/after the sessions which helped me a lot.’ (Rana)

‘Thank you very much for this really helpful feedback, I will work on improving the areas you suggested. Thank you also for your advice and encouragement’ (Jo)

Tutoring

“Just thought that you may like to know that after a rather gruelling interview process Beth has been offered a place at University College, Oxford. She felt that you were an enormous help in preparing her for both the exam and the whole process. You gave her great confidence. Thank you so much” (Lucy)

‘Just wanted to let you know that Teo received a generous bursary for Newton Prep on the basis of his academic performance which we accepted yesterday. We are delighted and happy for Teo and I have to say that without you this probably would not be possible. Thank you so much for giving Teo the opportunity and knowledge to learn and understand.’ (Bibi)

‘Apart from being reliable and punctual, Steven has a lovely patient teaching style and was able to build my daughters confidence in the subject. He was able to go over the topics that she was studying at school and explain them clearly so that she gained a much better understanding of them. I would definitely recommend Steven.’ (Stephanie)

Speaking

‘Just a note to thank you and Alexandra for the excellent lecture and logic activities you delivered last night. We thought that the revised format was excellent and it was exactly what we had hoped for – thank you for adapting the programme for us. The feedback from students has been very positive so far! They enjoyed the pace of the activities and the challenging nature of the logic discussions.’ (Dr Kate Kennedy, Head of History at Kingston Grammar School)
